Bernice L. Fells was born September 13, 1928 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Rev. John A. Fells, Sr. and Estell C. Mines Fells.

She received her early education from the Historical James Adams School in Coatesville. Bernice was baptized at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Coatesville at age 11.  She served as organist and was in the dramatic club. After graduating from S. Horace Scott Senior High School (1945), she went on to attend Cheyney College where she received a bachelor’s degree in education (1967) and obtained her master’s degree in education from Antioch University (1982). She taught social studies at Fitzsimmons Jr. High School in Philadelphia for 23 years (1967-1990).

In her adult years, Bernice was a faithful member of Mount Olivet Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia. She served in various areas at the church including the Tabernacle choir, Women’s Chorale, Director of the Sunbeams choir, Director of the Bell Choir, member of the Board of Christian Education, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Satellite Dramatic Club, Pennsylvania Club, and Church Clerk.

After she returned to Coatesville in 2008 because of illness, Bernice joined the First Baptist Church of Passtown.  Bernice was called home to be with the Lord February 10, 2016 at 87 years of age. She was preceded in death by five siblings, Kathleen, Joanna, Hanford, Marie and Daisey. 

She is survived by her brother, Rev. John A. Fells, Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; sister, Estell F. Lee of Coatesville, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
