William Lewis Boynes, Sr., 90, of Coatesville, PA, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at his residence.
Born in Peach Bottom, PA he was the son of the late John Russell Boynes and Jennie Elizabeth Boyer Boynes.
He was the husband of the late Cora Elizabeth Shockley Boynes with whom he shared many years of marriage.
Bill was one of the original baseball players of the first African American baseball team called the Black Socks in 1959 in Port Deposit Maryland. He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force.
Bill worked at Lukens Steel until he retired. He enjoyed watching western movies and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Bill will be deeply missed. He was the beloved patriarch of the family.
He leaves cherished memories to his children, Robin Bernard (Stacey) of Coatesville, Rita Whidby of Ohio, Linda Boykin and Teresa Hunter (Ira) both of Coatesville, Iyaan Muhammad of Arizona; brother, Charles Boynes, Lawton Oklahoma; brother-in-law, Sammy Banks; 18 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grand; special friends, Gilbert Graham, Wayne Graham, Michael Gravely, Charles Anderson, and Elvin Draper; Goddaughter Georgianna Chapman Hogue of Smithfield, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents and his wife Cora, he was preceded in death by his sons, William L. Boynes, Jr., Terry Boynes; siblings, John Boynes, Shirley Banks, Georgiana Booker; sister-in-law, Eileen Boynes; and brother-in-law Donald Booker.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 819 Coates Street, Coatesville, PA. A viewing will be held from 8:30 AM until the time of service.
