Walter Pugh Johnson, 94, of Coatesville, PA, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021, at home. Born in Coatesville, PA on June 1, 1927, Walter was the son of the late Herbert Alexander Johnson and Mary E. Pugh Johnson Hollingsworth.
He was the husband of the late Priscilla Mae Jackson Johnson. They were married in 1948 and together they shared 73 years of marriage until her passing on July 29, 2021.
He was a 1945 graduate of S. Horace Scott Senior High School. Walter was employed as a nurses’ assistant at the Coatesville VA Medical Center until he retired after 35 years of service. He also worked at Handi Crafters and the A & P Grocery Store.
He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Passtown for more than 75 years. During his membership, he served on several boards and auxiliaries including the Trustee Board, Senior Choir, Men’s Chorus, Sunday School and Men’s Fellowship. He also was a member of the Usher Board, the Pulpit Committee, and the Building Fund Committee.
Walter enjoyed bowling, fishing, and roller skating. Most of all, he enjoyed reading and spending time with his grandchildren.
In the community, he served on the Valley Township Board of Supervisors for 15 years. He was a member of the Interdenominational Church Ushers Association (ICCUA) and a 50-year member of the Lily of the Valley Masonic Lodge #59 in Coatesville. Walter’s life has touched many over the years. Even before his passing there were plans in place to have a street named “Walter Johnson Boulevard” to honor his legacy.
Walter will be deeply missed and forever cherished by his son, Rev. Walter H. Johnson (Sylvia) of Jacksonville, FL; his daughter, Patricia A. High of Coatesville; three grandchildren: Inga M. Norman of Coatesville, PA, Rev. Timothy A. Johnson, Sr. (Kimberle) of Rolesville, NC, and Andrea N. Johnson of Atlanta, GA.; five great-grandchildren: Al’leyah B. Bookard, Faithe N. Johnson, Gabrielle Bookard, Timothy A. Johnson, Jr., Naomi S. Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Walter was preceded in death by all of his siblings: Melvin S. Johnson, Thelma M. VanBuren, Charles E. Johnson, Sr., James A. Johnson, Sr., Bessie A. Jacks; and granddaughter, Erika Charmaine Norman.
Homegoing Services will be held at 11:00 AM, on Monday, September 20, 2021, at the First Baptist Church of Passtown, 117 Barber Avenue, Coatesville, PA.
A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM followed by a Masonic Ritualistic Service at 10:15 AM.
