Marie Spann Obituary

Marie A. (Washington) Spann entered the world in grand splendor on December 20, 1958, in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. She was born in love to her parents, the late George D. and Gwendolyn (Morton) Washington who also bore and raised seven children, three girls, and four boys. In her early years, Marie attended Tabernacle Baptist Church - Coatesville. Marie was spiritual and loved the Lord Jesus Christ often worshipping virtually. In true fairytale form, Marie was introduced to the love of her life Douglas J. Spann, Sr…they were High School Sweethearts! The lovebirds cemented their lifetime union in 1982 and this current year 2022 defines their 40th year of love, togetherness, and dedication to a wonderful marriage. From this blessed union, their children were born, Ralonda S. Spann, Maurice Spann, and Douglas J. Spann Jr. Marie transitioned peacefully from labor to reward on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Marie graduated from the Coatesville Area School District in 1976 where she excelled in her curriculum receiving a college scholarship to further her education. Ultimately, Marie’s maternal dedication was a higher self-purpose as she made the decision to forgo college to start a family. With her family settled, Marie began a professional career at National Liberty Corporation in Malvern, PA,  then with several other employers including Pennsylvania State Retail and Personnel Staffing Companies. Once again Marie’s maternal desires took precedence as she retired to Stay-at-Home Mom and she cherished this career path the most being so proud of her 100% availability to assist her children through school. After lovingly raising her children, Marie would go on to enjoy yet another career in Human Services, where her desire to care for and nurture special needs adults were realized.

Marie was the life of any party! She was lovingly known and appreciated for her infectious personality and the way that she loved her family and friends, especially her children and grandchildren. Marie was an AMAZING chef and found happiness in making any gathering enjoyable for her family and friends. She embodied the spirit of hospitality like no one else could! On any given summer day, you could find Marie and “The Women’s Auxiliary” sitting on her porch laughing and having a grand time, she loved her friends dearly as they loved her. Marie celebrated life in every way. She made the best of each passing day, especially throughout the years that she spent with the love of her life, Doug. You could find them together enjoying their children, cooking, entertaining, vacationing, shopping, and celebrating their favorite Philadelphia festivals and sports teams!

Marie will be sorely missed by her husband, Douglas Spann; her children: Ralonda of Parkesburg, PA. and Douglas Jr. of Downingtown, PA.; her siblings: Erwin Washington of Glenside, PA; Janet Miller, Evelyn Simmons, Francis Washington Sr. (Sylvia), and Andrew Washington all of Coatesville, PA.; her grandchildren: Rahshon, Dymere, and Phierce; sisters-in-law, Leticia Wilson of East Fallowfield, PA, Judy Spann of Philadelphia, PA.; brother-in-law, Eugene Gallimore (Christine) of Coatesville, PA; aunts, Jennie Morton, Carrie Washington; uncle, John Morton (Mildred), and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by her son, Maurice Douglas; one brother, Evangelist Mitchell Washington Sr.; and very recently her mother-in-law, Elsie Spann.
