Maitland Harvey Obituary

Maitland L. Harvey, 85,  of  Coatesville, PA, passed away  Friday, April  17, 2020, at  Green Meadows  Nursing  Facility in Paoli, PA. Born  January 15, 1935, in  Coatesville, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest son of the late Meryl Bedford  Harvey and  Reba  Isabella  (Jackson) Harvey.  

Maitland was the beloved husband of Esther  Lillian  (Flowers)  Harvey with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.   Maitland received his early education from the  James  Adams  School and attended  S. Horace Scott Senior High School through eleventh grade when he left school to join the military.   He served in the  United  States  Air  Force, working as an  Airframe repairman from  1953  to  1957 when he was honorably discharged.  

After returning from the service  Maitland worked for  Lasko  Metal  Co. and  Norcross  Greeting Card Co. in machine maintenance until the early  1980’s when he started his own business, Inside  Out  Home  Improvement, working as a  general contractor.   Maitland loved working with young people,  at one time he was a  Boy  Scout  Leader.    In the early ’70s after being prodded by his son and some friends,  he was convinced to become the manager for a  young group of musicians who became known as  The  Untouchables.    He opened his heart and home to this group of young people who he truly enjoyed working with until  1977.

As part of the community for 15 years Maitland served on the  Coatesville  Planning Commission. Maitland loved sports, he  played  football,  basketball  and  ran  track  in high school,  and  was  a member  of  the  Championship  Coatesville  Track  &  Field team  of  1952, he  was  an avid  sports  fan. He  especially  loved  the  Philadelphia  sports  teams,  but  was  also a  fan of  the  Golden  State Warriors  and  WNBA.      

Maitland  was  there  for  anyone  who needed  his  help, loved to tell  stories  of  his  younger  days, and just  talk with people  in general.   Later  in  life he  returned  to become  a member  of  the Episcopal Church of  the  Trinity  where he  went  as  a child  with  his  Parents.

Maitland  will  be  deeply  missed by his  wife  Esther  L. Harvey;  by two sons,    Andre' M  Harvey (Carla), Dana  J. Harvey;  Ricky Holmes, who was  like  a  son;  one  brother,  Meryl  Harvey (Rheda); three  grandchildren:  Brian J. Harvey  (Laura), Aja  M. Harvey-Gaffney (Nicholas),  Aaron J. Harvey;  two  great-grandchildren, Avianna  Skye  Harvey, Natsumi  Okoye  Gaffney;  sisters-in-law: Janice  Harvey, Dorothy  E. Johnson, Ruth Miller,  Barbara  Westmoreland, Jacqueline  Hunt; brother  in law  Gordon Flowers  (Sheena)  and a  host  of  nieces, nephews,  other  relatives  and friends.   “The  Untouchables”  Andre Harvey,  Carla Harvey,  Ricky Holmes,  Jimmy  Hills,  Joey  Hills,  Mary Hines, Sharon Johnson-Allen, Donna Parker, Garnell Brunson,  Wilson Lambert,  Charmaine Hicks,  Charles Dandridge,  Nate Caleb.

In  addition to his  parents,  Maitland  was  preceded in death by one  brother  Malcom  Harvey.

Due to the current corona pandemic, services will be held privately. 

He will be laid to rest in the Philadelphia Memorial Park in Frazer, PA.
