Joel C. Kennedy, “Joe”, 84, passed away, after a lengthy illness, on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at the Reading Hospital in Berks County.
A life-long resident of Coatesville Pennsylvania, Joel was the son of the late John Stevenson Kennedy and Mary F. Wynn. He was the husband of the late Shirley Thompson Kennedy. He was affectionately known as Joe by his family and friends.
He was educated in the Coatesville Area Public Schools. In the early years, Joe attended the Historical James Adams School and graduated from the S. Horace Scott Senior High School in 1953.
Joe worked as a general foreman at the former Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville for 42 years. He was an "Exaulted Ruler" of the Elks Mt. Vernon Lodge #151 of Coatesville.
He enjoyed playing pinochle and knock rummy card games with his friends, and he was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Joe loved to listen to songs sung by Ray Charles. He loved to quote portions of the late Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches from memory. He also could be heard quoting the scripture John 14:2.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Anthony Kennedy; sister, Irma L. Bailey, and grandson, Robert Neal Kennedy, Jr.
Joe will be deeply missed by daughters, Sheri A. Kennedy of West Chester, Lesly A. Brown and her husband Dennis, and Deborah L. Kennedy all of Coatesville; sons, Robert Neal Kennedy, Sr. of Coatesville, John Gary Valentine of Hawaii; grandson, Shamon “Tex” Kennedy whom he raised; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; daughter-in-law, Kim Milbourne whom he adored and many other relatives and friends.
At his wishes, services and interment will be held privately.
