James Donald Allen, 91, of Exton, PA, formerly of Malvern, transitioned to be with the Lord Friday, April 17, 2020, at the Penn Hospice facility in West Chester, PA, with his wife by his side.
Born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Samuel H. and Mary Bowman Allen.
Donald, as he was known, was educated in the Tredyffrin-Easttown and Phoenixville school districts. He served in the United States Army from 1952-1954.
Donald was the husband of Joan Bradford Pugh Allen, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage.
He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church of Phoenixville.
Over the years, Donald worked as a big rig construction truck driver throughout the Malvern/Paoli area and as a small engine repairman at the Berwyn Lawn Mower Repair Shop. He also had a long history working with horse veterinarians and trainers. Donald worked with horses that participated in the Devon Horse Show in Devon, as well as events at the Delaware Park Race Track, New Castle County, Delaware, and Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore MD, home of the Triple Crown’s Belmont Stakes.
Donald was an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies and his favorite television shows were Gunsmoke and In the Heat of the Night.
He also enjoyed his many trips to New Hampshire with his buddies.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Joan Allen; devoted niece, Deborah Allen Smith of Westampton, NJ; devoted step-children: Cassandra Pugh Dutton, Manuel Pugh, Michael Pugh (Denise), all of Coatesville, and Gregory Pugh (Charmaine) of Wilmington, DE; long-time friends, Kenneth Mitchell and Lewis Gaskins; 8 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by three brothers: Samuel Jr., Bowman and William Allen and one sister, Mary Jane Allen Moorehead.
The family wishes to thank everyone for the many acts of kindness extended to them during this time.
