Hilda Maude (Turner) Wright came into this world on August 24, 1929, one of ten children born to the late Edward D. Turner and Maude (Butler) Turner, in Haverford, Pennsylvania.
During the years of the great depression, her family moved to the “Sugartown” area in Malvern, PA, where she attended Green Tree Elementary school as well as Tredyffrin Eastown school in Berwyn, PA.
In the late 1940s, she met and married Vernon S. Wright, also of Malvern, who affectionately named her “Mitzi” because she did not like the name Hilda. From this union, they were blessed with three sons, Vernon Jr., Vaughn, and Ventnor.
Over the years, Hilda worked at the Burroughs Company in Great Valley and National Liberty, and the Paoli Post Office. She cleaned houses and did private duty nursing while raising a family in the Mainline area of Chester County. Hilda loved to laugh and tell humorous stories. Hilda was known to be a strong-willed self-determined woman. When she set her heart on something, she got it. She was also giving, and generous, almost to a vault. She often spoke of her children and wanted the best for them. She supported them and celebrated their accomplishments.
In the community, she was faithful in her role for over 34 years as church pianist and organist alongside her husband, Rev. Vernon S. Wright, Sr., who was the Pastor at Ebenezer AME Church in Glenolden, PA.
She enjoyed singing and traveling to play the piano for various events and people. She was a self-taught musician. Most of all she enjoyed telling people about the goodness of the Lord and all He had done for her and her family.
At age 90, Hilda peacefully departed this life on Monday evening, April 20, 2020, of natural causes, after a lengthy illness with dementia. Preceding her transition was her husband Rev. Vernon S. Wright, Sr.; granddaughter, Stephanie Loren Wright; sisters, Evelyn Cummings, Francis Turner, Phyllis G. Winters, Jean Lewis and Barbara Rheubottom; brothers, Edward Turner, Jr., Leroy A. Turner, Sr., Corporal Thomas Strickland Turner, Sr.
Hilda leaves her three sons, Vernon S. Wright, Jr. of Long Beach, California, Vaughn H. Wright of Chester, Ventnor T. Wright (Leslie) of Coatesville; sister, Constance Jackson of Media, PA; sister-in-law, Angie Turner of Devon, PA; brother-in-law, Calvin Wright (Lenore) of Exton, PA; six grandchildren: Sondra, Nigel, Valeisha, Victoria, Volonna, and Christian; fifteen great-grandchildren: Blaire, Marcus, Medina, Milan, Mayson, Jaxson, Malae, James, Vernon, Sonoah, Tanieya, Taleisha, Kelora, Eric, and Vivianna; two great-great-grandchildren, Gianna and Bailee and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is blessed to have had such a positive, determined, and supportive mother.
