Freda Anderson Obituary

Freda Mildred Anderson, 101, of Kennett Square, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at home after a brief illness. Freda was born in West Chester, PA on August 12, 1920, to the late Herbert and Alice Tillman. She was the oldest of 5 children: Betty Long of West Chester, PA, Frances Tillman (Deceased), Orville Tillman, and Sonny Tillman (Deceased) of Kennett Square, PA.

Freda lived in the Oxford area and attended public school in Lincoln, PA. She met and married Richmond Anderson, February 5, 1938, and relocated to Kennett Square, PA until he passed away on January 23, 1996, and from their union were 3 children: Howard Anderson of Wilmington, DE, Regina Anderson of Downingtown, PA, and Damita Anderson-Geigel of Wilmington, DE. Freda and her husband also raised 2 grandchildren, Howard Curtis Anderson of Kennett Square, PA, and Anthony (Tony) Anderson of Sarasota, FL.

Freda began working at an early age. She spoke about working at Starr Roses and working in the mushroom canning plant. She worked at Embreeville State Hospital in the laundry for 17 years until she retired.

Freda was the Mother of Second Baptist Church where she was a devoted member for many years under the leadership of Pastor Marvin Williams. She was an usher and church cook for many years. On September 17, 2016, she received a Certificate of Faithfulness from her church family.

Freda was the family Matriarch, and her home was the place for numerous family occasions. Her life was guided by her unwavering faith in God which was instilled in all the lives she touched. She was soft-spoken with a huge heart. Her advice and strength were always appreciated, and her kindness extended beyond her family to include her friends and strangers. Freda’s greatest joy was her grand, great, and great-great-grandchildren. She enjoyed Clover Day at Strawbridge’s until it closed. She also enjoyed shopping, knitting, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and cooking for her family. The family will miss her homemade yeast rolls, coleslaw and her famous pancakes and so many tasty dishes. She poured love and concern into so many she touched.

Lovingly known as “Mom-Mom” or “Mom-Mom Freda” by her grandchildren, cherished memories will fill the minds of grandchildren: Monique Garner of New Castle DE, Schreen Anderson of Wilmington DE, Nakia of Philadelphia, PA, Larry Thomas of Coatesville, PA, Khali Garner (Great-Grandson) of Philadelphia  Elijah Thomas Brianna Thomas  of Downingtown, PA, Monica Anderson of Wilmington De, Darlene Feliciano of Wilmington DE, Tia Durnell of Caln, PA, Troy Stevenson of Kennett Square, PA, Danielle King of Philadelphia, PA, 2 great-great-grandsons, Khamire Wannamaker of Wilmington, DE and Kaydenn Ross of New Castle, DE.
