Obituary

Delores Burgess, 76, of Woolwich Township, New Jersey, passed away Friday, July 7, 2023, at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill, Mullica Hill, NJ.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Dannie L. Gilmore Burgess and Wallie Burgess, and granddaughter of Doshie Williams Gilmore and James Gilmore, the great granddaughter of Isabel Sharpe Williams Gordon and David Williams, the great great granddaughter of Ceasar and Abigail Summerall Sharpe and the great great great granddaughter of Jack and Mariah Summerall, our ancestral father and mother who were former slaves.

Delores was the mother of one son Michael Anthony Burgess, an accomplished gospel musician, who preceded her in death in the year 2000.

Delores was a graduate of William Penn High School for Girls in Philadelphia in 1965. She worked as a human resource specialist for 35 years for the United States government until she retired.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, and crocheting.  Delores enjoyed traveling to Baxley, Georgia for the annual family reunion. Her family heritage was an important part of her upbringing, She was a strong believer in family unity. She also enjoyed taking trips to Daytona and Orlando, Florida for her birthday.

Delores was an avid television game show watcher and was a Philadelphia Phillies fanatic. She loved watching Historical Black College University (HBCU) games and enjoyed singing and listening to gospel songs.

Delores leaves lasting and treasured memories to her two brothers, Wally Burgess (wife Atlee Marie) of Pennsylvania, and Harold Burgess, Sr., (wife Muriel) of West Chester, PA; goddaughter, Carol Simpson; nephews, Keith, Evan, Steven, Drew, and Harold, Jr.; niece, Tamara; special cousins, Jenny Salami, Jeff Conaway, and Gwen Williams; aunts, Ethel Gilmore and Marian Gilmore and many other relatives and friends.

Homegoing services will be held at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Bethel AME Church, 334 East Miner St., West Chester, PA, with a viewing beginning at 8:30 AM until the start of the service.

The interment will be in Rolling Green Memorial Park, 1008 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA.
