On the evening of March 30, 2023, surrounded by family, God dispatched his angels to bring his beloved daughter Barbara Ann Westmoreland home. Barbara who was affectionally known as “Barbie” was born March 9, 1943, to her earthly parents Reverend Thomas Wesley Flowers, Sr., and Nettie May Flowers. She was one of 18 children born to this union. Barbara was born in Fisherville, PA and grew up in Downingtown, PA. She attended Downingtown Schools and lived in Downingtown most of her life.
Being the daughter of a minister inspired her to accept Christ during her formative years. She was baptized and joined the Mount Raymond United American Methodist Episcopal Church where she actively participated until her health declined. Barbara sang in the choir and was often featured to lead songs. She was an active member of the kitchen and Pastor’s Aid committees. She also assisted with cleaning the church.
Barbara was employed with Dopaco Products in Downingtown for 45 years before retiring in 2016. Working many long hours, she ensured that she could provide for her family (Proverbs 31:15). Barbara was described as a kind and loyal friend by her coworkers and neighbors on Jefferson Ave. Her home was a gathering place for family and friends. Her children’s friends came to love and appreciate her warmth, sound motherly advice (Proverbs 31:26) humor and on occasion her feistiness. To know Barbara was to love her.
During tax season Barbara became busy as a tax preparer. People came to Barbara from near and far for her to complete their taxes.
Barbara moved to Coatesville, in 2006, with her daughter and caregiver, Sheena. Even though she slowed down after retirement their home was still a place for family and friends to congregate. Co-hosting the family and friends cookout/fish fry Barbara’s famous potato salad took center stage. No one’s potato salad nor collard greens could compare to hers. Barbara loved to cook, and spaghetti was another one of everyone’s favorites. Even Pepper, the dog that Barbara at first didn’t want, became accustomed to her weekly spaghetti meal.
At the encouragement of a friend Barbara joined Eureka Chapter #12, Order of the Eastern Stars, Prince Hall Affiliated. During her membership, she was an active participant.
Barbara loved her dogs, Pepper, Kody, Chance, Mica and Dakota. She could be found holding them and smiling contently when visited. Barbara was very protective of her pet children.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was also predeceased by her sisters, Rebecca Butcher, Nettie Brown, Maryann Flowers, and Edna Flowers, brothers, William Flowers, Joseph Flowers, Thomas W. Flowers, Jr., Clarence Flowers, the triplets Harold, Henry and Howard Flowers, David Flowers, and a grandson Jeconiah Westmoreland.
