Alice Brown Lewis, 95, of Coatesville, passed away Friday, October 12, 2018, at Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
Born in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, she was the 10th of 11 children born to the late Arthur Winston Brown and Alice Williams Brown.
Alice was the wife of the late Dan Lewis with whom she shared 48 years of marriage.
In high school, she was a talented basketball and softball player. After high school, she went to and NYA School and then moved to New Jersey where she worked for the government making batteries for airplanes. The company shut down in 1942, and she moved to Jamaica, New York where she worked for a doctor in a private practice. Seeing potential in Alice, the doctor sent her to a practical nursing program.
Alice served 5 years as an LPN for the Department of Veterans Affairs, 14 years as a nurse at Embreeville Hospital, 4 years as a nurse at Atkinson Hospital of Coatesville: she then served as a private duty nurse until retiring in 1995.
Alice was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she served on the Mothers’ Board for many years.
Alice served as an advisor to the gospel group The United Voices of Love. Her house was always open to family and friends; you could get a warm meal and some worthy advice. She was affectionately known in the community as “Aunt Chick.”
Alice will be deeply missed by her son, Harvel L. Brown (Annette) of Coatesville; brother, Dr. Lewis Brown of Philadelphia; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, a special niece, Alice L. Eggleston; caregiver, Joanne Wright and a large host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 819 Coates St, Coatesville, PA. Her viewing will begin at 8 AM until 9:45 AM.
Interment will be held at Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer PA.
Flowers can be sent to the church on the day of the service. The theme colors are pink and white.
