Walter William Cheatham, 78, of West Brandywine Township, Coatesville, PA, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at Freedom Village at Brandywine.
Walter William Cheatham, the second son of the late John Henry Cheatham and Louise Martha (Dorsey) Cheatham, was born January 29, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. As a very young child the family moved to Philadelphia, PA. Walt, as he was known, attended Philadelphia public schools until his second year of high school then he attended Downingtown Industrial School. Upon graduation, at the age of seventeen, he attended Cheney Teachers College.
Walt decided to take the examination to work for the City of Philadelphia. While working for the City of Philadelphia, he decided to attend Drexel University to become a civil engineer. After graduating, the city offered him a position to become the director of the parks in Philadelphia. At the same time A.I. DuPont recruited him for an engineer's position. Walt decided that he would take the position at A.I. DuPont in Delaware.
Walt held many positions at DuPont and the family relocated with him to Savannah, Georgia, then back to headquarters in Delaware. After raising their sons, his wife LaVerne relocated to the Kingwood Community in Houston, Texas and then back to Delaware with Walt.
Walt received his degree in Business Administration from Augusta College. After taking the Engineers' Professional Examination he received his Professional Engineers' Licenses for the states of South Carolina and Delaware while fulfilling his position to A.I. DuPont in Augusta, Georgia.
While Walt worked for A.I. DuPont, he volunteered at the Wilmington, Delaware Detention Center for young boys. He tutored them in math for several years. Walt was very active in his church as well as the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware.
Walt devoted his life to helping others and had a gift for seeing potential in others. He had a gentle nature and enjoyed sharing his wisdom with friends and family. He retired from A.I. DuPont in 2002.
Walt leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, LaVerne; son, Walter William, II (Letitia) , son, Roy Dean; granddaughter, Lysandra Ruth, (Cathey); grandson, Walter William, III, (Kori); brother, John Henry (Ruth), brother, David Anthony (Estelle); niece and goddaughter, Mavis (Andre); nephew and godson, David' nephew, Brooks; niece, Lysa and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
