On Saturday, December 14, 2024, Vernell (Artis) Edwards, of Coatesville, PA, surrounded by her family, passed away at her residence. She was 86 years old.

Born in Snow Hill, NC, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Geneva Exum Artis. She was affectionately known as "Country" because of her southern accent.

She worked as a custodian at the Coatesville School District until she retired.

Vernell was a pillar of strength and love within her family and community, cherished for her generous spirit and warm heart. She had an uncanny ability to bring people together, often through her passion for cooking. Her home was filled with the comforting aroma of delicious chicken and dumplings or mouth-watering macaroni and cheese.

An avid card player, Vernell found joy in the simple game of Pitty Pat, where she delighted in the company of friends and family. Music was another of Vernell's great passions. She found solace and joy in the rhythms of R and B and the uplifting harmonies of Gospel music.

She leaves cherished memories to her sons, John H. Woodward, Jr., Phillip Woodward (Theresa), Albert Edwards all of Coatesville; daughter, Tracey Kelso of Coatesville; sister, Cora L. Harvey (Billy) of Goldsboro, NC, Geneva Grantham of Pikeville, NC; brothers, Jesse Lee Artis (Elnora), Walter Artis (Edna Mae), George Artis (Lillie) and James Artis (Bertie) all of Goldsboro, NC; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Dollie "Doll" Artis Ward, Mary Bradley; brothers, Columbus "Bill" Artis, Cornell Artis, Willie Artis and Jacob Artis.

Special thanks to Vernell's niece, Maryann Ray and her husband Julian Ray for the countless times they transported her after she was unable to drive.

A service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Hutchinson UAME Church, 825 East Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA. A viewing will be held beginning at 9:00 AM.
