IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Adams,
Jr.
January 27, 1947 – October 7, 2024
Robert "Bob" Adams Jr., a meticulous and devoted civil designer, Vietnam veteran, and beloved father, passed away suddenly at the age of 77. Born on January 27, 1947, in Wilmington, DE, at 5:40 am, weighing 5 lbs. 7 oz., Bob was the cherished son of the late Robert and Mary C. (née Falone) Adams.
Bob's journey through life was marked by discipline, dedication, and a love for things done well. He grew up with a curiosity and passion for understanding how things worked.
A graduate of the former De La Warr High School in New Castle, Class of 1965, he pursued further education and experience in the military, setting a strong foundation for his career as a civil designer in the engineering field. He was very adept with computers, learning how to build them while he was learning AutoCad. Most of his many skills were self-taught.
His years of service during the Vietnam Conflict included two tours of duty with the U.S. Army, 589th Engineers Batallion. Bob was later a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force National Guard. His service exemplified his unwavering commitment to his country. He carried the discipline and values he learned in the military throughout his life.
His career as a civil designer was marked by innovation and dedication, contributing significantly to high-profile projects that demonstrated his meticulous approach and technical expertise.
After returning to civilian life, Bob married Susan, with whom he raised his two sons, Scott and Jeff. After that, Bob found companionship and joy for over 30 years with Jeanette, who shared so many of his life's adventures.
Though Bob felt he was known to be something of a grumpy old man, he really had a heart of gold. Bob was a man who valued order and precision in all things. He will be remembered for his deep love and care for helping others in his immediate community. He was known as "Neighbor Bob". Whether it was discussing computers, electrical, plumbing, construction, roofing, automobiles, or more, his wealth of knowledge and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on those around him.
Bob's sons fondly remember him as being a decent, honorable, and hard working man, a testament to his character and the values he instilled in his family. He was a role model who imparted values of integrity, kindness, and honor. He was also a great Scoutmaster.
Bob was always eager to lend a helping hand, undertaking projects for friends and family with the same dedication he brought to all his endeavors.
In his spare time, Bob found joy in creating stained glass works of art, each piece reflecting his eye for detail and creativity. He designed and crafted stunning wooden furniture pieces, as well as incredible metalwork pieces. Later, he started getting into carving wooden totems. An avid player of billiards, he spent many evenings playing and instructing while sharing great times with friends and family. He enjoyed cribbage, poker, and horseshoes as well.
He had fantastic cullinary skills, especially when he prepared dishes from scratch ("the only way to do it"), including chili, lasagna, pasta fragioli, his famous potato salad, beans with bacon that he smoked himself, and the much-anticipated peanut butter cookies at Christmastime.
Every year, Bob hosted a great picnic, inviting neighbors and friends to join in a celebration of community and camaraderie. A true Renaissance man, Bob's multiple skills and vast intelligence even enabled him to build his own grill for the occasion.
Activities like this we will deeply miss. Bob leaves behind a legacy of love, ingenuity, and unwavering dedication.
Bob is survived by his sons, Raymond Scott Adams of Maui, Hawaii, Jeffrey Robert Adams (wife, Shirlee) of Christiana, PA; brother, Ronald Adams (wife, Donna) of Maryland; sister, Ellen Hannigan (husband, Charles) of Delaware; 7 grandchildren: Gryphon, Moira, Willow, Jace, Troy, Jude and Xave; great granddaughter, Freya, and Jooma the cat.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved long-time companion, Jeanette "MoonSong" Mallory-Hill.
