("Griff") Griffy, Sr.
November 9, 1946 – May 28, 2024
Raymond L. Griffy, Sr., "Griff", 77, of West Chester, PA, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at his residence. Born in Coatesville, PA, he was the son of the late Wert Lacy and Sophie Perry Griffy. He was the husband of Karen Vanessa Wise Griffy with whom he shared over 19 years of marriage. Griff was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and a well-known DJ in Coatesville and many other places. He was a 1965 graduate of S. Horace Scott Senior High School. He furthered his education with specialized training in broadcasting, which laid the foundation for his illustrious career starting as a radio host at WCOJ and DJ spanning over 50 years.
Griff's professional journey was multifaceted. He worked at WCOJ in Coatesville, PA as a DJ. He worked diligently as a table operator at Lukens Steel Company for 41 years, demonstrating an unwavering commitment and work ethic until he retired. Simultaneously, his passion for music and community engagement led him to become a cherished DJ. Whether he was spinning tracks and records at the Bongo or the Elks Lodge, DJ Griff brought joy and energy to every event. His love for music was matched only by his dedication to his community. He was a proud member of the Elks the former Mt. Vernon Lodge #151, I.B.P.O.E. of W. of Coatesville, where he held the esteemed position of Past Exalted Ruler.
Griff is often referred to as "a Legend", a title he rightfully earned. Griff was a man full of life and energy, known for his sharp fashion sense and entrepreneurial spirit. He had a deep love for Coatesville and was always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need, especially up-and-coming local DJs whom he mentored for many years. His vibrant presence and contributions to the community will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Wise-Griffy of West Chester; daughters, Raynera Griffy-Hundley (David) of St. Louis, MO, Rayonna Griffy (Marquis) of Scranton, PA; sons, Raymond Griffy, Jr. (Amanda) of California, Anthony Griffy of Pennsylvania, Blaine Watson (Kalolaine) of Coatesville, PA, Damon Watson of Pennsylvania, Ortega Baker of Florida, Prince Griffy of Coatesville; bonus daughters, Tiwanna Culler (Antonio) of Malvern, PA, Venessa Wise of Atglen, PA, Cierra Wise (Jordan) of Parkesburg, PA; brothers, John Griffy of Coatesville, PA, Ronald Griffy of Coatesville, PA; sister, Tina Brunson of Coatesville, PA and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by one son, Shannon Torres; brother, Nelson Griffy IV; and stepfather, Nelson Griffy III. Though his presence is gone, he will not be forgotten. Griff leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and dedication that will continue to inspire the many lives he touched.
Homegoing Services will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Hutchinson Memorial UAME Church, 825 East Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA 19320. A viewing will be held from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM.
Interment will be held in Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester.
