Obituary

Life began for Metteree Julia Smith in Cheraw, South Carolina, on November 3, 1937. She was the daughter of the late Harley and Ora Ellerbe Smith. On Saturday, December 13, 2025, Metteree departed this life at the age of eighty-eight years.

Mett's journey began at the Historic James Adams School, continuing through her graduation from Scott High School in 1955. She dedicated 34 years of service working in the laundry at the Coatesville Veteran Administration Medical Center in Coatesville before retiring in 1995. After retiring, she worked for many years at the Coatesville Food Cupboard & Fluff & Fold Laundromat before retiring again. She was a member of the VFW Post 2404.

She attended the Second Baptist Church of Coatesville, where she was a nurse and sang in the Senior Choir. Although Mett never drove, she traveled to many places. In 2009, she took her very 1st plane ride to Las Vegas with her niece & her husband. Mett was known for her affectionate, high-pitched voice, balling up her fist, and saying choice words to you all out of love. Mett was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, enjoyed traveling, shopping, playing cards, watching game shows, soap operas and cowboy movies, and spending time with family and friends.

Her legacy will forever be cherished by her son, Kelvin Smith of Coatesville; granddaughters, Lynne Wilson-Smith, Shante Sarah Robinson, both of West Chester; great grandson, Dekaree Wilson-Smith of West Chester, nephew; Navarro Smith of Coatesville; nieces, Theresa D Butler of Coatesville, Bridget Comer and her husband, Antuan of Chicago, Illinois, Shanika Smith-Opiyo, of Columbia, South Carolina, Karshena Smith of Coatesville, Tanica L. Smith of Philadelphia, cousin/sister, Mamie Parker of Cheraw, South Carolina, Aunt Lousie Ellerbe of Coatesville, a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and girlfriends; Cynthia Turner, Maxine Hammond, and Roberta Dantzler-Brannon.

In addition to her parents, Metteree was predeceased by her siblings: Harley Smith, Jr., Rand and Andrew Smith, Laura Smith, Louis, Lorraine, and Louise Smith, Betty Wilson, Lucy Wilson, nephews, Carl Smith, Lamont Smith, and Patrick Perry.

Homegoing Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Wright Funeral & Cremation Services, 725 Merchant Street, Coatesville PA. A viewing will be held from 11 AM until 12:45 pm Her Interment will be held privately.
