Obituary

On Sunday, February 5, 2023, Laura Wilhelmina Folks, 96, was called home to be with the Lord, while surrounded by family at home.

Born in Coatesville, PA, Laura was the daughter of the late Vernon and Ethel Mae Spottwood. She was the wife of the late Travis Harvey Folks with whom she shared 37 loving years of marriage.

She received her early education from the Coatesville area public schools and she attended the historical James Adams Elementary School.

Laura had various types of employment throughout her lifetime, she was employed as a mushroom cutter, worked in a gun factory, and performed domestic work. She retired from the Coatesville VA Hospital after over a decade of working within the housekeeping division. Following retirement, she took on a job at the CYWA. In addition, she enjoyed coordinating bus trips to destinations like Wild Wood in her free time.

She was a faithful mother of the First Baptist Church of Bernardtown, in which she had been a member since childhood. She loved the Lord and enjoyed attending church service.

Laura was extremely organized and an amazing historian. On a nice day, she could be found in her yard sitting under her tree. She was an avid Philadelphia sports fan. Along with her love of watching sports, she enjoyed watching the stories and game shows.

Laura was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. She loved caring for others and took great pride in caring for her family. Everyone who knew Laura loved her and she made everyone feel like family.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Laura was preceded in death by her son, Vernon Lee Folks Sr., her daughter, Barbara Jean Purcell, and her s iblings, Charles Keasley, Elsie Mae Green, and Harry Williams.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret Folks of Parkesburg, PA; granddaughter whom she raised, Laurie L. Folks (Ricky) of Coatesville, PA, grandsons whom she raised: Vernon Lee Folks Jr. of Coatesville, PA, Anthony Folks of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren Tonya L. Smith of Charlotte, NC, Tamia L. Jackson (Timothy) both of Charlotte, NC; Kenneth L. Smith (Johnnay) of Downingtown, PA , Keith L. Smith (Julia) of Charlotte, NC, Kevin Towles (Latifah) of Coatesville, PA, Charles Folks (Ramonita) of Reading, PA, Marsha Folks of Rockingham, NC;  31 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-great grandchildren; godchild: Henrietta Green-Haines; brother-in-law, John Morton of Delaware and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 11, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Bernardtown, 1208 Youngsburg Rd, Coatesville, PA. A viewing will be held 8:00 AM until 9:45 AM.

Interment will be held in the Mount Zion AME Church Cemetery, in Atglen, PA.
