Obituary

Joan V. Spriggs Foster, 86, of Downingtown, PA, passed away at home on Thursday, December 21, 2017.  Born in West Chester, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Anna Irons Spriggs.  She was the wife of the late Edward G. Foster with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.

Joan attended West Chester schools graduating from West Chester High School in 1950.  For a number of years, she worked in the Downingtown School District as a teacher's aide.  She attended Bethel A.M.E. church in Downingtown, PA.

Joan was an avid doll collector and also loved antiques.  She enjoyed crafts, often creating memorable masterpieces for her children and grandchildren.  Listening to gospel music and dancing were two of Joan's passions.  She also enjoyed going to the casino and working on crossword puzzles.  Her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren.

She leaves cherished memories to her daughters: Vernettia Foster of West Grove, PA; Michelle Hurtt and her companion, Jimmie, of Philadelphia, PA; Laura Hardy and her husband, David, of West Chester, PA; Georgette Foster of Wilmington, DE; Clarisse Foster of Clifton Heights, PA; Holly Mayo and her husband, Mark, of West Chester, PA; Romona Foster of Silver Spring, MD; her sisters: Hazel Thomas of Limerick, PA; Anna Daye of Doylestown, PA; Romona Jones of Lansdale, PA; her companion of 13 years, William Collier, of Downingtown, PA; 11 grandchildren: Michelle Lee, David Hardy, Jr., Charisse Jones, Joshua Jackson, Daina Hunt, Velva Foster, Duriel Hardy, Amourette Gray, Sharmika Jackson, Markesha Mayo, Michael Thompson; 6 great grandchildren: Jamil Jones, Joshua Jackson, Jr., Aashiyana Morton, Christian Hardy, Janiyah Morton, Luke Hardy; four sisters-in-law: Doris Spriggs, Velva Spriggs, Essie Womble, and Lula Pollard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan V. Foster; nine brothers: John Spriggs, William Spriggs, Alonzo Spriggs, Harry Spriggs, Elwood Spriggs, Carl Spriggs, Leon Spriggs, Fortune Spriggs, Ray Spriggs; and two sisters: Gertrude Ferguson and Alta Coleman.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, December 30, 2017, at New Life in Christ Fellowship, 1 South Fifth Avenue in Coatesville, PA. There will not be a public viewing, however, friends may greet the family beginning at 9:00 AM.

Interment will be in Rolling Green Memorial Park, West Chester, PA.
