IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan Diane
Nixon-Eggleston
December 7, 1951 – June 11, 2024
Joan Diane Nixon-Eggleston, of Coatesville, PA passed away Tuesday afternoon on June 11, 2024 at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester, PA. She was 72 years old. She was born in Washington, DC and spent some of her early childhood living in Clayton/Raliegh, North Carolina. In North Carolina, she enjoyed walking with her mother and seeking edible Red Clay. Growing up, on Saturday mornings she picked blackberries so she could eat blackberry dumplings with her family and friends. She was always fearless and a risktaker.
Joan was a member of the Second Baptist Church where she was baptized. She received her early education in the Coatesville Area School District. In High School, she played basketball, softball, fencing, lacrosse and ran track. Joan attended Lincoln University, majoring in Physical Education. While at Lincoln, she played volleyball and basketball, earning the MVP award and Division III All-American Honorable Mention. She later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, earning a B.S. Degree in Respiratory Therapy and getting her State Certification as well. She worked as a Respiratory Therapist for 26 years at the Chester County Hospital and 17 years at West Chester GI Associates.
She was an awesome daughter, mother, sibling, grandmother, aunt, cousin and wife. She was an enforcer of the family, even willing to fight Mike Tyson if it came to it. Family was always FIRST. She was very caring, strong-willed, loving, and more than willing to lend a helping hand. Cookouts were her forte getting JOY out of watching her children, grandchildren, siblings, nephews, nieces and guests - eating, singing, playing games, and interacting with one another. Her last act of kindness was her planning the Father's Day cookout for the family and visiting Ms. Dorothy Jones. She loved R&B music and concerts. Her favorite artist was Patti Labelle. Joan and her sisters blissfully danced in the kitchen together all the time.
Joan never took her foot off the pedal, constantly encouraging all family members to better themselves through education, hard work, and dedication to that particular commitment. She loved attending her grandchildren's sporting events and accomplishments. She would always be the first one in line to congratulate you with a smile.
Joan was preceded in death by her son, Dameon A. L Nixon Sr; brother, Harrison Emerson Nixon, Jr; sisters, Betty Annette Nixon-Hurdle (spouse of Steve), Constance Coleman-Williams (spouse of Paul); daughter-in-law, Amia Lewis; nieces, Talietha Walton, Janelle Hurdle and a dear friend, Denise Waldon.
In addition to her husband Wesley, she is survived by her sons, Allen Coleman (wife Stephanie), Jayme Coleman, and Wesley Eggleston II (wife Ebony) all of Coatesville; siblings, Robert Nixon (wife Bonnie), Rosemary Nixon-McGibboney (husband Min. Gerald), Dorothy Nixon ( husband Joe) all of Coatesville; grandchildren, Shavon Lewis, Dameon Nixon, Jr., Domonique Nixon, Damaris Nixon, Kylah London, Damere Nixon, Aleesa Eggleston, Jackson Coleman, Octavia Coleman, Jordan Coleman, and Wesley Eggleston III; and 7 great-grandchildren.
She also leaves to cherish her memory best friends, Pamela Depte, Mary Fowlkes, Beverly Maxwell, Linda Long, Tondee Baker, and Dr. Eylese Sydner-Joseph; bonus daughter, Tammey Williams, bonus sons, Frank Johnson, and Dante Dantzler. Recognizing special appreciation to Jennifer Nixon and Karen Hunt as well as a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Joan Diane Nixon "JD" will be missed by many and in our hearts forever.
