Janet Olivia Wroten was born to the late Jupiter and Lila Wroten on October 29, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She departed this life on May 26, 2026.

Janet attended Fitler Elementary School, Roosevelt Jr. High School, and graduated from Kensington High School in Philadelphia, PA.

Janet was married to the late Whit Jones in 1963. To this union, Darren was born in 1965.

Janet was active in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). She authored the book “Choice To Change,” which chronicled her path to sobriety. She was a fierce advocate for those struggling with addiction of all kinds and sponsored many individuals. She took on speaking engagements throughout the tri-state area on behalf of recovery. Janet loved to sing and dance, and was part of a singing group as a teenager.

Janet worked at Sears, the Inquirer, and in the Hospitality Industry. Being particularly fond of the elderly, Janet worked closely with them as a Home Health Aide. This brought her great joy and satisfaction.

Janet joined the Sanctuary Church of the Open Door under the pastorate of the late Dr. Audrey F. Bronson, D. Min., and was baptized there along with her son, Darren. She was warm and very friendly, never meeting a stranger. Because she would always bring and distribute an assortment of candies to church, she was called “The Candy Lady”.

Janet was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda Malson, and her brother, Barry Hill.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Darren Jones (Carol); one granddaughter, Olivia Carolyn Jones; four sisters: Barbara McGlawn, Diane Caffie, Sheila Wroten, and Rosalind Rawls. She will be greatly missed by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.
