Porter Bryant, Jr.
February 17, 1936 – May 18, 2025
James Porter Bryant, Jr., affectionately known as "Sonny", age 89, of Coatesville, PA, passed away at home on Sunday, May 18, 2025, with family by his side. He is the eldest son of the late Rev. James Porter Bryant, Sr. and the late Rev. Sarah H. Boggs Bryant, born at the historic Atkinson Memorial Hospital in Coatesville, PA.
He was raised in the Borough of South Coatesville and educated in the Coatesville Area School District. Sonny touched the lives of many and lived a life of unwavering dedication to helping others. His truest love, above all, was to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and his greatest heart was winning souls for Christ. He was a long-time member of the historic Hutchinson Memorial UAME Church. Sonny was also an avid entrepreneur and enjoyed fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Sonny was a dedicated and loving father, and will be missed by his family, including his daughters, Arlene Bryant Scott of Jacksonville, FL; Diane Deas (Mark) of Jacksonville, FL; Jane Kennedy of Coatesville, PA; and Sheila Dunn of Coatesville, PA; grandchildren: Kendra Reeves of Newport News, VA, Adam Scott IV of Coatesville, PA, Dionna Kennedy of Coatesville, PA, Roland Kennedy, Jr. of New York City, NY, Justin Deas of Jacksonville, FL, Hailey Dunn of Oxford, PA, Faith and Heaven Dunn of Honey Brook, PA; eight great-grandchildren: Aiden Boulden, Amerie Flamer, Amaya Hopkins, Amir Kennedy, Autumn Kennedy, Dior Kennedy, Kanye Gilliam, and Sace Hamilton; brother, Moses Bryant; sisters, Clara Milbourne, Rev. Shirley Trammell, Violetta Pernsley and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his parents, Sonny is preceded in death by his son, Glenn Bryant; and siblings: Betty Forte, Charles Bryant, Eleanor Towels, Elsie Young, Helen Bryant, Thomas "TB" Bryant, and Vincent Bryant.
Sonny's celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM, on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the historic Hutchinson Memorial UAME Church, 825 East Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA 19320. A public viewing will be held from 9:30 – 10:45 AM.
The interment will be held in Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester, PA, following the celebration of life.
