Dr. James Edward Perry, Jr., 94, of Glen Mills, PA, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at home. Born in Coatesville, PA, he was the son of the late Edward Perry, Sr. and Delia Alston Perry.
James was a bright and ambitious young man who excelled both academically and athletically. His early education began at the historical James Adams Elementary School. A 1950 graduate of S Horace Scott Senior High School, he was an avid sportsman, playing both football and basketball, and later continued his athletic pursuits in a West Chester basketball league. James's academic journey took him to Virginia Union University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with the highest honors. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi and was a distinguished member of a scientific fraternity.
After graduating from Virginia Union, he served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1957 in the Military Police before being honorably discharged. His dedication to education was unwavering, and he spent many years as a beloved professor at Virginia Union University, inspiring countless students with his passion for mathematics and science. He enrolled in Penn State University, where he obtained a Master of Science degree and furthered his academic contributions by earning a PhD in Computer Science. He used his knowledge to teach others at Penn State University and Cheyney University, where he left an indelible mark on the academic community.
A member of the National Teachers Association, James was a leader not only in academia but also in his community. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, guiding young people with his wisdom and kindness. His love for Penn State was rivaled only by his enthusiasm for the Philadelphia Eagles, and he delighted in cheering them on.
He had a love for shopping was well-known, and he was fond of buying items in multiples, a testament to his generous spirit and thoughtful nature.
James was a proud veteran and devoted Penn State enthusiast whose life was a testament to the power of education, service, and community.
He is survived by one son, Stephen P. Perry of Los Angeles, California; brother, Archie Perry of Philadelphia; sisters, Adelia A. Perry Stanton of Coatesville, Juanita Perry of Philadelphia; sister-in-law, Anna Perry of Coatesville; brother-in-law, Earl Smith of Reading; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by sisters, Alfretta V. Perry, Ruby L. Smith; brothers, Clyde L. Perry and Roderick M. "Rod" Perry.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 819 Coates Street, Coatesville, PA. A viewing will be held from 9:00 AM until 9:45 AM.
Interment will be held in Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester.
Flowers may be sent to the church on the day of the service.
