With heavy hearts, we announce that James Garfield Dennis, 82, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, in his home, surrounded by family. Affectionately known as “Sonny” or “Pop”, he was born on October 3, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sonny was the beloved son of James Dennis Jr. and Theresa Butler Dennis.
Sonny graduated from St. Francis Catholic School in Philadelphia in 1961. The following year, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army, a journey that took him to many places around the world. He was honorably discharged in 1964. During his military service, he was stationed in Hawaii, which always held a special place in his heart. He often spoke of returning one day, though sadly, he never had the opportunity.
After his military service, Sonny was introduced to truck driving by his father-in-law, a career he quickly grew to love. He spent more than 30 years behind the wheel, driving for several companies and taking great pride in his work.
Sonny served for several years as the Philadelphia Chapter President of the Thunder Guards, where he formed lifelong friendships and countless memories. He loved sharing stories about his time with the Thunder Guards and his passion for motorcycles.
Sonny was a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan and also loved to cook. His perfect day was a simple one—relaxing at home surrounded by family and friends, enjoying a cold beer, watching football, tuning into his favorite cooking shows, or binge-watching classics like Ice Road Truckers, CSI: Miami, In the Heat of the Night, or Spenser: For Hire. He never grew tired of rewatching movies starring Steven Seagal or Chuck Norris.
Though Sonny was a man of few words, his actions spoke volumes. He expressed his love through quiet acts of kindness, unwavering support, and simply being present for the people he cared about. Gentle, calm, and easygoing, he had a steady presence that brought comfort to everyone around him. He rarely allowed life’s challenges to disturb his peace, choosing instead to meet each day with patience, humility, and grace. His warm smile, friendly spirit, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, James Dennis Jr. and Theresa Butler Dennis, and by his cherished sister, Marguerite Dennis.
He is lovingly remembered and survived by his wife, Cynthia Dennis; his daughter, Michele Culclasure (Major Sr); his son, Scott Dennis; and his grandchildren, Tyrell Thompson, Stephen Dennis (Daisy), Isiah Dennis (Asia), Eric White, Iesha Culclasure (Luis), Avery Culclasure, Major Culclasure Jr, Christopher Richardson, Elijah Dennis-White, Noah Dennis-White, and Jonah Dennis-White. He also leaves behind his beloved niece, Nicole Steele; his nephews, Keith Dennis and Kevin Dennis; a host of great-grandchildren; great-nieces and great-nephews; extended family; and many dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Sonny will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives were made better by his presence. While our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the example of a life lived with quiet strength, unwavering love, and simple joys.
Interment with military honors will take place on at 11:30 am on Friday, July 31, 2026 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life at 4:00 PM on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Community Center, 501 E. Miner Street, West Chester, Pennsylvania. Friends and family are warmly invited to attend.
