Dr. Emir Duzić, PhD, DVM (1954–2025)
Dr. Emir Duzić, an esteemed American Bosnian scientist and humanitarian, passed away on January 5, 2025, at the age of 71, following a brief illness.
He was raised in Bugojno, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dr. Duzić pursued a lifelong passion for science and medicine. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Sarajevo in 1978. He also completed postgraduate research at the University of Tennessee's Faculty of Medicine and a postdoctoral degree at the Harvard University School of Medicine. His career was marked by numerous professional accolades, reflecting his dedication and contributions to the medical and scientific community.
Dr. Duzić's humanitarian spirit shone brightly during the Wars of Secession in the former Yugoslavia (1992–1995). Amid the devastation of the Sarajevo siege, he worked tirelessly to arrange medical care and rehabilitation for victims, ensuring their recovery in the United States.
Beloved by all who knew him, Dr. Duzić will be remembered for his compassionate heart, quiet humility, warm humor, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. His old-world charm and deep sense of duty left an indelible mark on those around him. Son Benjamin observed, "He was the best dad ever, and he was loved by a lot of people."
Dr. Duzić is survived by his devoted wife, Fikreta, their 10-year-old son, Benjamin, his brother Mensur, his sister Jasminka, and countless friends and colleagues who mourn his loss and celebrate his legacy.
A private family service will be held, with plans for a public memorial to honor his life and contributions.
Burial will be in Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer, PA.
