Obituary

Deacon Joseph F. Owens, the loving husband of Sister Cynthia Owens entered into eternal rest, on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at the Pembrooke Rehabilitation Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Deacon Joseph lovingly remembered as "Joe" or "Joey", was 64 years old.   Born on September 22, 1957, Deacon Joe was one of the last few babies born at the Valley Forge Army Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Deacon Joe was an active registered LPN. He retired from the Coatesville VA Medical Center where he worked for 30 years. In Joe's early years at the VA Medical Center, he would ride his bike to work, rain or shine from Paoli, PA to Coatesville and back again.  He worked the night shift and was always on time for work.

In his childhood years, Joe attended the Refuge Pentecostal Church under the leadership of Elder Thelma Richey with mother Maddie Wells in Berwyn, PA on Howeville Road.  At home, Joe would suddenly jump up and start shouting all through the house, and his great grandmother would chase him with a broom to stop him.  They both would end up laughing and out of breath. In Deacon Joe's later years, he visited, joined, and became a regular dependable and active member of the Greater Deliverance Church under the leadership of, Apostle Bobby G. Duncan. Deacon Joe served as president of Pastor's Aide and was an angelic voice in the choir. He transported many members, friends, and visitors in his personal vehicle as well as the church van on many Sunday mornings and often afternoon services. Deacon Joe loved his church family and was also a part of the Celebrate Recovery ministry, the prison ministry, and the evangelism ministry. Deacon Joe also lent a hand whenever he was needed. He attended and supported the Men's Ministry and fabulously interceded in prayer for the lost and the sick. Deacon Joe is remembered by his family as a strong, loving and non-judgmental father figure.   Deacon Joe had an old soul. He loved to cook and bake pies. He had a love for food, singing, traveling, landscaping, going on cruises, and cleaning.  Deacon Joe had many talents. Deacon Joe leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 33 blessed years, Sis. Cynthia Owens, God-son, Jerel Langford of Camden, New Jersey whom he helped raise; another God-son, James Hardy of Coatesville, PA; a daughter, Keeyana Hawkins of Arizona; 2 granddaughters, Mersadeis Hawkins and Alexis Hawkins; one great-grandson, Kaing; 2 sisters, Sis. Donna Washington and Sis. Angel Washington both of Coatesville, PA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Marie Davenport; his daughter, Migdalia Hawkins, sister, Lu Ann Brown, and his brother Billy.

Deacon Joe will be most remembered for his bright smile, hearty laugh, and willingness to make time to help, support or just spend time with all of those who loved him.
