Cornel Lloyd Matthews, 72, of St. Louis Missouri, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019. Born April 4, 1947 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He was raised in a Christian home by his parents, Hilton Carwee Matthews and Clara Frances Walker Matthews.

Cornel, affectionately known as Scruffy, was educated in the Coatesville Area School District in Pennsylvania where he established himself as a student-athlete. He excelled in mathematics, ran indoor and outdoor track, was captain of the cross country team and broke four cross country records. Upon graduation from Scott High School in 1965 he entered Morgan State University as an accounting major and became a ROTC cadet. He transferred to Cheyney State College his sophomore year.

Scruffy was a friendly and likable person.  He delivered numerous men and women of all ages and ethnic backgrounds of substance abuse.

He leaves his wife, Sandra; his children: Anthony Spann, Teresa Marie Matthews Smith (Keith), Stefan Matthews (Joia), Courtney Jones, Mattheson Daniels, and Morrie Daniels (Kim); many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 AM Friday, September 27, 2019 at Hutchinson Memorial UAME Church, 825 East Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA, with a viewing beginning at 9 AM.

Interment will be held in New Evergreen Cemetery in Coatesville, PA.
