IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Henry
Tate
June 30, 1923 – November 1, 2025
***This obituary is posted by request of local family members***
On Saturday, November 1, 2025, after 102 years living life fully, Charles Henry Tate departed this world engulfed in the peace and love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Charles was born on June 30, 1923, to the late John and Clara Tate.
Charles was predeceased by his wife of 42+ years, Sarah Boyd, and 7 siblings: Diego (Louise), Katie (Lewis), Ruby (Nathaniel), Thelma (Fred), John (Mildred), Andrew (Janie), and Lottie (James).
Charles' elementary education began on Chair Road in Castle Hayne, North Carolina in a two-room schoolhouse known as the Wrightsboro School for Colored Children. He continued his schooling at Williston Industrial High School and graduated in the Class of 1941. He joined the Navy where he served his country for almost 4 years and was Honorably discharged as a Storekeeper Third Class V6 USNR and a World War II Veteran in 1946.
After serving our country, Charles moved to Coatesville, Pennsylvania when convinced by his brother Andrew to join him where he lived for 60 years. While living there, he worked at the VA Hospital as a Nursing Assistant and Physical Therapist; worked with the Lukens Steel Mill and later served as a limousine driver and a security guard. In 1979, Charles Henry Tate retired.
Charles was an active member of Hutchison Memorial UAME Church in Coatesville, PA. He taught Sunday School; conducted Wednesday Bible Study; was president of the Trustees; was a Pastor's Steward for over 30 years; and was also a Lay Leader.
In March 2022, he relocated to Castle Hayne, NC, to live with his neice, Celestine Whitted. Charles joined St. James A.M.E. Church where he attended Sunday School regularly, a member of Class #6 and the Sons of Allen actively serving and giving the members a word of prayer on Sunday Morning Services.
He and his wife enjoyed parties, gardening, boating, fishing, and traveling to North Carolina frequently. Charles always "dressed to the nines" as it was once called, with an array of caps to cover his smooth bald head – a trademark of the Tate Men. He joined the Masons at an early age and was a lifetime member, 59 years.
Charles Henry Tate is survived by his nieces and nephews, Celestine Whitted, Marvin Whitted (Deloris), Emerson Whitted, Jacquelyn Benton, Sandra Yates, Frederick Alcorn, John Milton Tate (Donna), Dorothy Tate (Edward), numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews than we could ever count, and family and friends who all loved him dearly.
The family of the late Charles Henry Tate invites you to join us for a Memorial Service on Sunday, November 16th at 12:00 p.m. at Hutchinson Memorial U.A.M.E. Church, 825 East Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA.
We welcome all family and friends to come together in love and remembrance.
