IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles S.
Johnson, Sr.
April 27, 1954 – January 29, 2022
Early Saturday morning on January 29, 2022, Charles Samuel Johnson, Sr., "Jingles", passed away unexpectedly at his residence. He was 67 years old.
Charles was born on April 27, 1954, in Coatesville, to the late Carrie Elizabeth Johnson and Earl Sherwood Anderson, Sr. He was the husband of Rose Marie (Brandon) Johnson.
He was educated in the Coatesville Area School District and was a 1973 graduate of Coatesville High School. Charles was a stellar wrestler in high school. After high school, he matriculated and attended Cheyney University.
Over the years, he had been employed at Lukens Steel and the Devereaux Foundation.
In 1987 he began working at the Coatesville V.A. Medical Center where he worked for 38 years.
Charles was known to be a political debator, and to say he loved to talk was an understatement. He was passionate about debating and storytelling and was both a historian and comedian. It was his "genetically engineered intellect" that gave him the gift to gab. Yet he was genuine and kind.
He loved all types of music and was particularly fond of listening to the sounds of Santana, James Brown, and classical music. In his free time enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, reading and traveling, fine dining, and going to Shady Maple Smorgasbord with family and friends. And let it be known, he was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He took and participated in several trips to basketball's collegiate "Final Four" and two trips to the Super Bowl.
Mostly, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and took pride in being there for their sports and various activities. He was proud of his children and they remember him as being the best dad.
In addition to his mother, father, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Darcell Johnson, brother, Gregory Ervin Johnson, stepfather, Walter "Gravy" Gray, and mother-in-law, Gladys Brandon.
He leaves cherished memories to his wife; Rose Marie Johnson; two daughters, Kira Jamila Johnson of Pittsburgh, PA, Shanita Shawnette Johnson of Coatesville; one son, Charles Samuel Johnson, Jr., (Rebecca) of Coatesville; six grandchildren, Kayaira Sledge, Shyne Boggs, Melrose Daniels, Charles Samuel Johnson, III, Bryson Sledge and Kaiden Johnson; five sisters, Sarah Robinson of Coatesville, Linda Johnson (Wade) of Indiana, Gardenia Morrison and Beverly Reeves (Dennis) both of Coatesville, Rosa Johnson of Philadelphia; brothers, Earl Spencer Johnson (Evelyn) of West Chester, Earl Sherwood Anderson, Jr, and Eric Anderson (Misti) both of Coatesville; two aunts, Charlesie Beatty of Coatesville, and Hazel Cubbage of Ercildoun; sister-in-law, Lorie Brandon; close friends, David Morton, Barry Jackson, Jami Craig, and Alexander "Bu" Norman, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives, and friends.
A walk-thru public viewing will be held from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM followed by the service at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 819 Coates Street, Coatesville, Pennsylvania 19320.

Through the years we played basketball with the fellas at Devereux and different gymnasiums. We developed a great brothership through the years. Every time we saw each other our greeting would be,"It's your birthday" People would ask me, is it your birthday. I would tell them no, but every time I get the ball I was going to score on somebody. Not too long ago I ran into him and he said "Boy, I hear you still playing." I said to him, "I still got legs don't I." We laughed so hard.
