IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bertha M.
Brickus
January 13, 1942 – January 28, 2021
Bertha M. Brickus passed away at her home in Newport News, VA surrounded by loved ones, on January 28, 2021 at the age of 79, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bertha Brickus was born on January 13, 1942 in Coatesville, PA to Jessie Mae Wilkerson and Thomas Purcell. She was educated and raised in the Coatesville area. She got married to Edward Brickus on August 8, 1959 and during their union they conceived Bertha's only daughter Suzette.
Bertha left Coatesville, PA at the age of twenty-four and moved to New York City to make a better life for her and her daughter Suzette Sheppard-Brickus. Upon arrival, she attended New York City Technical College where she obtained her GED, Associates and Bachelor's Degree. She was an employee of NYC for many years. She worked for the Department of Sanitation, HRA, and she retired from The Department of Finance. After retiring she sold her home and moved to Newport News, Virginia in 2011.
Those who knew her knew she loved to read, travel and crochet. You would often find her watching her classic television shows, Murder She Wrote, Perry Mason, Poirot, and Sherlock Holmes.
She was preceded in death by four siblings and she is survived by her only daughter, Suzette; a sister, Claudette Sellars; three brothers George "Beanie" Parks, Keith Parks, and Gary "Corky" Parks; three granddaughters, Janee Sheppard, Latifah Bing, and Onie Sass; three great-grandchildren, Jahzir Sheppard, Tyler Bing, and Malia Bing; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She leaves behind many cherished memories with her loved ones, especially with her baby brother Gary. She is resting comfortably with all her family and friends that have preceded her in death and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM, Thursday, February 4, 2021, at New Evergreen Cemetery, Coatesville, PA.
