Andrew Arnold, 96, of Coatesville, PA passed away peacefully on December 11, 2019 at Saint Martha's Manor in Downingtown. Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Frank and Kate (Self) Arnold. Andrew was affectionately known as "Cooly".
He received his early education in the Coatesville Area School District. Mr. Cooly attended the historical James Adams School. After high school, he enlisted in the military. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Cooly married the love of his life Vivian White Arnold in April of 1953. He called her Mrs. Ritzie. Together they shared 49 years of marriage until she passed away in 2002.
Mr. Cooly worked at the former Belloit Steel Company in Downingtown and also worked as a nursing assistant at the Coatesville Veterans Administration Medical Center for over 30 years. He really loved his job.
Mr. Cooly was a great historian. He could tell you stories about the City of Coatesville, the people of James Adams School and the happenings at Baker Farm which was a historical neighborhood in South Coatesville. He would often encourage young people by telling them to "Work, Get A Job; Get an Education."
Mr. Cooly was a member of Hutchinson Memorial UAME Church in Coatesville. He a member of the local gun club in Modena. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting deer, planting flowers and working in the garden. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Most of all, he loved the Lord and served faithfully.
He leaves his daughter, June Mathis Shorts of Philadelphia PA; son, James Toland and his wife Brenda of Coatesville; 8 grandchildren;17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Cooly was preceded in death by one sister, Dolly Mae Arnold Tooles and one grandson, Stefon Shorts.
Mr. Cooly will be missed. Though he is gone, we rejoice in knowing he is present with the Lord.
Funeral Services will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at Hutchinson Memorial UAME Church, 825 East Chestnut Street, Coatesville, PA. A viewing will be held from 10 AM until the service time.
Interment with military honors will be held in the Philadelphia Memorial Park in Frazer, PA.
Condolence messages for the family may be shared on the guestbook page. Flowers may be sent to the church on the day of the service.
