IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alberta J.
(Jennings) Alston
March 21, 1928 – July 13, 2025
Alberta J. Alston, 97, of Coatesville, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at her daughter's home.
Born in Union County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Pauline Jennings and the wife of the late Harvey Lenzie Alston. She relocated to Philadelphia, PA to live with her aunt after graduating high school.
After moving to Coatesville, where she met and married Harvey in 1952, she began her career in nursing as an LPN at the Coatesville Hospital and then the Brandywine Hospital. She remained a dedicated employee well into her 80's before she decided to retire (for the second time!)
Alberta raised her children attending Second Baptist Church. Later in life, she moved her membership and was a beloved member of First Calvary Church of God in Christ in Coatesville, PA, eventually becoming the Mother of the church under the leadership of Bishop Clarence Lewis, III. She attended bible study and virtual Sunday service faithfully every week under the pastorate of Elder Roland Holmes, Jr., whom she loved dearly.
She enjoyed listening to Gospel Music, especially the Hymns. Her favorite pastime was watching General Hospital and Jimmy Swaggart. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, the Golden Girls (Flora Green, Dorothy Conway and Nancy Morton), whether on the phone or at church services, and with her good friend, Barbara Marshall.
She was a wonderful homemaker. Sunday dinners with family and friends were a tradition in her household. There was always more than enough food to go around. Her cakes and sweet potato pies were a hit. Sundays were filled with laughter, fun and games and even an occasional dance contest. She looked forward to receiving annual Easter baskets from her grandchildren Neko and Pooder. Most of all, she was a beloved mother and grandmother to many.
Alberta was an avid sports fan. She supported her family in each sport they played. During football season, it would be nothing to hear her shouting at the TV rooting for her favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. She also followed basketball (college and professional) and looked forward to the NFL draft each year.
Alberta is survived by her son, Harvey L. Alston (June); daughter, Baleria Williams (Dan); adopted son, Kenny James; special grandchildren, Melanesia "Neko" Lewis a.k.a. "Nekaboosie" and Larry "Pooder" Lewis, Jr. a.k.a. "Chucklehead" ; sister, Elizabeth Norman; special nephew, Ronnie Jennings (Crystal); daughter-in-law, Loretta Wilson Alston; 15 grandchildren; many, many great and great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her mother and husband, she was preceded in death by sons, Jeremiah Jennings, Gary Alston and Stanley R. "Hussey" Alston; daughter, Evangelist Paulette Lewis; granddaughter, Tenesia Jones; grandson, Stanley Jones; great grandson, DeJar Jones; brother, Fred Jennings and her beloved friends affectionately called the "Golden Girls".
Homegoing Services will be held at 6:00 PM, on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at New Life in Christ Fellowship, 1 South 5th Avenue, Coatesville PA. A viewing will be held from 4:00 PM until the service time.
Interment will be held on Monday, July 21st, in New Evergreen Cemetery, Coatesville, PA.
