Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Jake Lee and Susie J. Freeman Monroe.  At the age of 10 his mother married George Monroe Jr., who became the father in his life until his death.  He was the husband of Essie M. Lee with whom he shared 42 years of marriage.

Gus earned his certification in Auto Mechanics from BAC Vocational High School in 1959.

He served two years in the US Army in Seoul, Korea until he was honorably discharged.

Gus had many jobs including working for Boeing as a mechanic after being discharged from the military, driving a cab; he owned his own grocery store in the Wynnfield section of Philadelphia and in 1980 he opened up Gus’s Automatic Transmission.  Gus worked in the Housekeeping Department of the Veterans Administration in Coatesville for over 20 years.  He also worked at Giant in Exton for 15 years and Kelsch associates for five years.   He was a jack of many trades and “the King of Chess.”

Gus enjoyed watching Judge Judy and the Eagles play while eating his favorite snack popcorn.
