George Edward Sampson, 80, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at home.
Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Naomi Marsh Sampson and Wendell Sampson (Francis).
His family relocated to Philadelphia when he was just 9 years old. George received his education from the Philadelphia public school system. He was a graduate of Overbrook High School.
He shared 23 years of marriage with Carolyn Sampson-Brown.
George became a baker and in 1969 he started working at the famous Melrose Diner and Bakery. He was known for making delicious butter cakes. He retired after 45 years.
George was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He would wear his gear proudly. He enjoyed listening to Jazz and he liked watching the Warriors play basketball.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by Dwayne Shuford whom he raised like a son; one grandchild, Jammarr; sisters, Virginia Pearson, Louise Sampson, and Roberta Hicks.
He is survived by a son, George M. Sampson and his wife Keya of Coatesville, PA; a daughter whom he raised, Rozalind Thomas of Philadelphia; sisters, Francine Milner (Ambrose), Joyce Frazier (Darryl); brother, Lee Sampson (Ernestine); brother-in-law, Jesse Pearson, Sr.; George’s companion of many years, Vera Ball; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held at 1 PM on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Wright Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 725 Merchant Street, Coatesville, PA.
Interment will be held privately.
