Shirley Ann Bookman Young, of Philadelphia passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Born in Little Mountain, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Bookman and Louise Chatman Bookman. She received her early education within the Newberry Public School System. She met and married Booker T. Young then relocated to Philadelphia in 1972.
Shirley worked as a Certified Nurses Assistant for twenty-five plus years at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center. Shirley was nurturing, a good listener, strong and funny. She enjoyed dancing, coloring, cooking and having a good time. She loved to cook, she loved to eat, and have a Pepsi every now and then. Some of her favorite pastimes were talking on the phone to friends and family, and watching what was happening on Cedar Park Ave.
Shirley is survived by two daughters, Monique (Warren) Bookman Washington of King of Prussia, Phelesia Chantae Bookman of Philadelphia; two sisters,  Willie Lee Clark of Little Mountain, South Carolina, Cassandra (Charles) Bookman Young of Jacksonville, Florida; two brothers, Larry Bookman and Bruce (Geraldine) Bookman  both of Little Mount South Carolina; 7 grandchildren: Scott Washington, Tashika Bookman, Scosha Washington, Tuesday Bookman, Scorey Washington, Sconya Washington and Tori Bookman; and a great granddaughter Lincoln Bookman;  She is also survived by very close friends Earl and Jean Brooks; the neighborhood of Cedar Park and Walnut Lane and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Booker T. Young; son, Clarence Young; and three siblings, John Bookman, Genesis Bookman and James Bookman.
Homegoing Services will be held at 11 AM Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Golden Star Baptist Church, 1635 North 27th Street, Philadelphia PA 19121.  The viewing will begin at 9 AM.
A second Homegoing Service will be held at Mount Zion AME Church in Little Mountain, SC on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 1 PM followed by the burial in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Wright Funeral and Cremation Services. Inc. of Coatesville, PA and Wilson Funeral Home of Little Mountain, SC.
Flowers can be sent to the church on the service day. The theme color is lavender and white. Condolences can be shared at the guestbook tab.
