Charles E. Holmes, Sr.

Charles Edward Holmes, Sr., 74, of West Chester, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 at Seasons Hospice in Phoenixville, PA. One of twelve siblings,  Charles was born October 28, 1942 in Culpepper, Virginia to the late Frances Thompson and Robert Burke Holmes.
After he graduated from George Washington Carver High School, Charles served two years in the US Army until he was honorably discharged.
He was employed by several companies and retired from Highway Materials in 2002.
His favorite sports were basketball and football. Charles was a diehard Red Skins fan.
Prior to his illness, Charles was a faithful member of Mt. Tabor AME Zion Church in Avondale. He served on the Steward Board, the Usher Board, the Men’s Fellowship and the Men’s Choir.
Charles leaves to cherish his memory his loving devoted wife, Cheryl S. Brown Holmes; three children, Charles Holmes Jr. (wife Beth), Maurice Holmes (wife Nadine) and Dionne Holmes; stepson, Michael Johnson (wife Tina); four brothers, Rev. Stanley Holmes (wife Martha), Ollie Holmes (wife Helen), Daniel Holmes , Andrew Holmes; three sisters, Harriet (husband Theodore) Sally Holmes and Irene Holmes; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by George, Randall, Robert, and Mary Francis.
Services will be held 11 am Saturday, June 17, 2017 at  Mount Tabor AME Zion Church, 314 Church Street., Avondale, PA. There will not be a viewing however a visitation with the family will begin at 10:30 AM.
Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church.
